MS Research &amp; AI 2 (the <a href=\"https:\/\/allenai.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>A<\/strong>llen <strong>I<\/strong>nstitute for <strong>AI<\/strong><\/a>) partnered with leading research groups to prepare and distribute for free the COVID-19 Open Research <a href=\"https:\/\/pages.semanticscholar.org\/coronavirus-research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dataset<\/a> (CORD-19). Mining useful insights from this vast-and-growing data is a goldmine for analytics, NLP, and Deep Learning.&nbsp; <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The CORD-19 AI Challenge <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Canadian<a href=\"https:\/\/singularityhub.com\/2020\/02\/05\/how-ai-helped-predict-the-coronavirus-outbreak-before-it-happened\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> <strong>BlueDot<\/strong><\/a> and a couple of similar AI-based warning systems showed, weeks ahead of the WHO, that public authorities worldwide were using outdated analytics tools in forecasting and warning. Hence the<em> Tasks<\/em> section of the CORD-19 dataset: \u201ca <em>call to action to the world&#8217;s artificial intelligence<\/em> experts to develop text and data mining <em>tools<\/em> that can help the medical community develop answers \u2026&nbsp; \u2026data mining approaches to find answers to questions within, and connect insights across, this content\u2026&nbsp; \u2026<em>What do we know about: \u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>Virus Transmission,<\/em><strong> <\/strong>incubation, stability, seasonality, persistence, protective gear<\/li><li><em>Medical Care,<\/em><strong> <\/strong>challenges, solutions, best practices, management, shortages, telemed, home care&nbsp;<\/li><li><em>Risk Factors,<\/em><strong> <\/strong>mitigation measures, pre-existing diseases, smoking, etc.<\/li><li><em>Virus Origins &amp; Evolution,<\/em> variations, different strains, animal\/livestock hosts<\/li><li><em>Interventions<\/em> to prevent community spread, such as school closures or travel bans etc. <\/li><li><em>Vaccines and treatments,<\/em> drugs in development, clinical studies<\/li><li><em>Diagnostics &amp; Surveillance<\/em><strong>, <\/strong>screening, early detection, sampling methods, tradeoffs between speed, accuracy and accessibility (of tests).<\/li><li><em>Ethical Considerations, <\/em>social science research, needs of caregivers, identifying misinformation during outbreaks etc.<\/li><li><em>Information Sharing, <\/em>data-collection standards, communication methods, coordination of local and Federal, private, public, non-commercial and academic communities.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>And the response of tech firms was?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overwhelming.In a few days, AI people volunteered by thousands. From one company alone (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ericsson.com\/en\/blog\/2020\/4\/ai-and-data-science-to-fight-coronavirus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ericsson<\/a>, to pick just one example), 350+ employees took part: data scientists, data engineers, data visualizers, PM\u2019s, task managers, leaders\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For operational AI,\nthere\u2019s a need for much more data, up to date, with less \u201cnoise\u201d and outlier\ndata (\u201cfar-off\u201d values). This is improving as you go, in pace with the spread\nof COVID-19 and international collaboration. Also, Google, FB etc. are trying\nto reduce noise \u201cout there.\u201d During pandemics, text mining from social media in\ngeneral is a useful training-data source for ML systems (but, consequently,\nalso a source of noise, outliers, or outright fakes). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several open-source apps are emerging.
