Implementing VMware vSphere on Data ONTAP

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • Describe VMware vSphere 5.1 virtualization solutions
  • Configure physical and virtual infrastructures
  • Provision the virtual infrastructure with Data ONTAP operating in 7-Mode and Data ONTAP operating in Cluster-Mode storage
  • Create, migrate, and clone virtual machines (VMs)
  • Protect the virtual infrastructure
  • Monitor and optimize the virtual infrastructure
  • Articulate the NetApp value proposition when integrating Data ONTAP with vSphere 5.x
  • List and describe the best practices for connectivity, provisioning, data layout, and multipathing
  • Describe the storage savings in a virtual environment that result from deduplication, compression, and thin provisioning
  • Identify some troubleshooting scenarios in a virtualized environment and articulate the solutions for resolving the issues

Audience

NetApp employees, channel partners, and customers

Prior knowledge

  • NetApp core technical training or equivalent knowledge
  • NetApp SAN core technical training or equivalent knowledge
  • Basic knowledge of VMware virtualization

Course Content

**For more in-depth instruction on implementing and managing a VMware vSphere environment on NetApp, see our VMware vSphere on NetApp (VVNA) course.**

Learn how to implement VMware vSphere virtualization solutions on NetApp® Data ONTAP® 7-Mode and clustered Data ONTAP. In this course, you learn how to deploy VMware virtual infrastructure on NetApp storage. The exercises use clustered Data ONTAP.

Detailed Course Outline

Module 1 vSphere Storage
  • Explain how VMware vSphere is a virtualization platform
  • Describe the datastore categories and their applications
  • Explain why the Data ONTAP operating system is the ideal storage platform for VMware
  • Set up a two-node storage system that runs Clustered Data ONTAP
Module 2 vSphere FC Connectivity
  • Configure and verify FC connectivity in the Data ONTAP operating system
  • Configure and verify FC connectivity in vSphere
  • Configure LUN access in the Data ONTAP operating system
Module 3 vSphere iSCSI Connectivity
  • Discuss what to consider when you configure networks for vSphere
  • Configure and verify iSCSI connectivity in the Data ONTAP operating system
  • Configure and verify iSCSI connectivity in vSphere
  • Configure LUN access in the Data ONTAP operating system
Module 4 vSphere NFS Connectivity
  • Configure and verify NFS connectivity in the Data ONTAP operating system
  • Configure and verify NFS... Läs mer
