Databases and SQL

Course Summary

The course introduces databases, database design and SQL – the accepted language for working with data in relational databases, including storage, searching and processing. The training is vendor-independent and focuses on basic principles of relational databases and SQL rather than on specific database technology. The content is built from scratch and requires no prior knowledge. At the same time, the ambition is that during these two days the participants will reach a level where the knowledge can be used practically immediately after the course.
The course content is based on general principles of relational databases and SQL and is largely transferable between different database systems, such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, DB2, FileMaker, FirebirdSQL and Access.

Course Objective

You will learn:

  • Explain how relational databases are structured and how they work
  • Design and implement simple database models
  • Retrieve, filter and sort data from one or more tables
  • Add, update and delete data in databases
  • group, summarize and perform calculations on data
Target Audience

This course is aimed at system developers and programmers, who need to be able to develop and maintain applications against a database, as well as advanced database users who need to be able to formulate and query their own queries against a database.

Course Details

The course is structured with a clear combination of theory and practical elements, allowing participants to immediately put the knowledge into practice to deepen their understanding.
The practical exercises can be performed in any database environment. The same sample database is available in both SQL Server and Oracle. In customized training, the database environment is adapted to the needs and wishes of the company.
For open course sessions, Microsoft SQL Server is mainly used. When differences between different database managers are relevant, these are highlighted and compared during the course.

Course agenda:

  • Relational databases
  • Data models
  • Changing the table structure – Data Definition Language (DDL)
  • Updating data in tables – Data Modification Language (DML)
  • Create simple SQL queries
  • Other SQL functions
  • Data filtering
  • Row level calculations in SQL
  • Column calculations and grouping of data
  • Selecting data from multiple tables in the same query
  • Several variants of JOIN
  • Overview of data valorization and performance
