CL170 OpenStack Administration: Control Plane Management

CL170 OpenStack Administration: Control Plane Management

Course overview

OpenStack Administration: Control Plane Management (CL170) provides participants with hands-on skills in administering and monitoring Red Hat OpenStack environments where the control plane runs on Red Hat OpenStack Services on OpenShift and the compute nodes run RHEL-based VM workloads.
The course focuses on how OpenStack services are managed as Kubernetes resources, how to ensure good health and performance in the control plane, and how to troubleshoot operators and workloads in the OpenShift environment. Participants also learn how to configure and customize the control plane through Kubernetes Custom Resources.
The course is based on Red Hat OpenStack Services on OpenShift 18.

Course Objective

After the course, the participant will be able to:

  • Monitor and analyze the health of the OpenStack control plane
  • Troubleshoot operators, services, and compute nodes
  • Configure and customize OpenStack services via Kubernetes CRDs
  • Manage compute nodes and data plane services efficiently
  • Using OpenShift as a platform to operate OpenStack environments

Target Group

The course is aimed at:

  • Platform Engineers
  • Cloud Administrators
  • System Administrators
… who work with hosting, monitoring, and debugging Red Hat OpenStack environments and want to learn how to manage the control plane through Kubernetes-based resources.

Prerequisites

Recommended skills:

  • Red Hat System Administration I (RH124)
  • Preferably also RH134 and RH294 (Ansible), or equivalent experience
  • Red Hat OpenShift Administration I (DO180) or equivalent knowledge
  • Basic understanding of:
    • Data center storage (NAS, SAN, protocol)
    • Data center networks (ISO model, VLAN, firewalls, IP protocols)
    • Object storage (e.g. S3) – meritorious but not required
    • Ceph – meritorious but not required

Certification

No certification.

More about the course

1. Introduction to Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform
Identify OpenShift’s architecture and resources, navigate both the web interface and command line, and find information about relevant commands.
2. Inspect OpenStack Services on OpenShift
Identify OpenStack services running on OpenShift and assess the health of the OpenStack operator and its dependencies.
3. Customize OpenStack Services
Enable, disable, and configure OpenStack services.
4. Verify API connection for OpenStack
Identify the resources that connect the OpenStack control plane to the data plane.
5. Verify Connection to OpenStack Cell Services
Ensure that an OpenStack cell is properly connected to database and messaging services, and that compute nodes can access the cell’s services.
6. Access to storage resources in OpenStack
Verify the status and connectivity of storage services in OpenStack.
7. Ensuring Reliable OpenStack Services
Configure and evaluate high availability in the control plane and its supporting services.
8. Verify Network Encryption for OpenStack Services
Inspect the configuration and ensure that network communication uses certificate-based encryption.
9. Inspect data plane services and compute nodes
Identify data plane resources and assess their health.
10. Customize an OpenStack data plane
Apply and verify custom configuration to the data plane node groups.
