Network technologies and data communications

Network technologies and data communications

Course Summary

This is the course for those who want a solid foundation in the field of networking and data communications.
The training goes through terminology, how data networks are built, architectures, protocols and standards and puts them in a practical context to understand how the different parts are connected and why we have the environment we have today.
This is a real hands-on course and you will, together with our experts and your course friends, work on several concrete solutions that you will be able to use right back at your workplace!
The goal of the course is for you to be able to take care of, troubleshoot and localize problems in the local network, as well as understand the terminology when communicating/discussing with third parties such as hosting companies, internet service providers, etc.
The course focuses on local networks and their connection to the outside world.

After completing your training, you will

  • have an understanding of terminology
  • understand the difference between bridges, switches and routers
  • have basic knowledge of network configuration, maintenance, administration and security.
  • know how addressing at different levels (MAC/IP) works in networks.
  • feel confident in your role at the company.
  • know how and in which steps data networks are built.
  • have a basic understanding of protocols, architectures and standards.
  • know the different products and players on the market.

You who need an introduction but at the same time a solid foundation to stand on before working as a network technician / claimant / administrator

This training is delivered by Jörgen Strandberg

Jörgen is an IT consultant with over 40 years of experience in various areas from hardware to architecture, security and program development. For several years, the focus was on design and security in large IT systems at private and public actors. Jörgen is probably one of the most certified consultants in Sweden with about 70 certifications from Microsoft, VMware, Symantec, HDI etc.

Today Jörgen works on developing advanced software for secure integration of external data sources into internal systems. Jörgen enjoys sharing his knowledge and experience and has been training at informator since 1996.

Practical exercises

The course mixes theory with practical elements so that the participants get both the understanding and the idea behind how things work but also the knowledge that they can do it themselves.

Some examples of laboratory work done during the course

  • Connect a physical network, connect networked equipment and set up wireless access in a secure way.
  • Configure a network to a given spec. (IP addresses, netmasks, gateway)
  • Watching network traffic using the network analyzer
  • Practical troubleshooting in both hardware and configuration.
  • Divide the network into multiple segments with VLANs

In the labs, you will gain an understanding of commands such as ping, tracert/traceroute, arp, ipconfig/ifconfig, netstat and route.
