Basic course in network technology and data communication

This is a clear introduction to how modern computer networks work – from basic terminology to network architecture, protocols and standards. Everything is put into a practical context to understand how the different parts are connected and why today’s IT environment looks the way it does.

This is a hands-on training where you, together with our experts and other participants, work on concrete solutions that you can immediately use when you are back at your workplace.

The course provides you with the tools to manage, troubleshoot and localize problems on the local network, while learning how to communicate effectively with external actors such as hosting companies and internet service providers.

Please note that the course is sometimes organized in cooperation with our partners, which means that a guaranteed start does not always apply, especially for courses in Gothenburg.

Prerequisites

No prior knowledge is required for this course in Network Engineering and Data Communication. The course is adapted for beginners and is also suitable for those who want to strengthen their foundation in networking and IT.

This course does not have any associated certification. Each participant who completes the course receives a course certificate.

Practical exercises

The course mixes theory with practical elements so that the participants get both the understanding and the idea behind how things work but also the knowledge that they can do it themselves.

Some examples of laboratory work done during the course

  • Connect a physical network, connect networked equipment and set up wireless access in a secure way.
  • Configure a network to a given spec (IP addresses, netmasks, gateway)
  • Watching network traffic using the network analyzer
  • Practical troubleshooting in both hardware and configuration.
  • Divide the network into multiple segments with VLANs

In the labs, you will gain an understanding of commands such as ping, tracert/traceroute, arp, ipconfig/ifconfig, netstat and route.
