The APM Project Professional Qualification (PPQ), developed by APM, the chartered body for the project profession, assesses capability in delivering projects. Based around a case study provided in advance, the PPQ Assessment comprises a scenario discussion, an oral exam and a written report. This one-day workshop is the tutor-led part of the overall programme (see diagram below) and covers all elements of the qualification and assessment and will take you through the learning outcomes, the assessment criteria and each part of the assessment process. You will have the opportunity to practice the techniques used in the Assessment Centre and be able to prepare fully for the APM PPQ.

Those who hold the APM PPQ are eligible to apply for full membership of APM and follow Route 1 to the APM Chartered Project Professional (ChPP) standard.

Important notice: Bookings for this Preparation Workshop do not include the APM PPQ Assessment Centre. You will be required to book your PPQ Assessment directly via the APM website.

The PPQ Assessment Centres are run separately by APM at a later date to this Preparation Workshop, we recommend those attending this course allow a minimum of six weeks before attending the PPQ Assessment.

On our programme you will learn how to:

  • Understand how the assessment will be carried out
  • Interpret the requirements of APM in awarding the Project Practitioner Qualification
  • Provide the evidence required for the scenario, oral and written parts of the PPQ Assessment
  • Create a framework on which to build your preparation for the PPQ Assessment Centre

Ideally, to attend PPQ you should have:

  • experience in a responsible leadership position in a project environment (preferably as project manager or running run a key control function of a large-scale project)
  • pre-existing project management knowledge and experience
  • ideally passed the APM Project Management qualification (PMQ) or an equivalent.

This programme is not intended to teach you the knowledge you need to undertake the PPQ. You are expected to already have an appropriate level of knowledge and experience to take part. This course focuses on the PPQ Assessment Centre itself. If you do not have the above requirements, we suggest you book onto the Project Management Qualification (PMQ) and look to gain more experience in a project environment.

This highly interactive programme uses the APM’s sample case-study with a combination of discussion, exercises and activities that replicate the PPQ Assessment process.

Pre-course work

Pre-course work is an essential part of this programme. It must be completed before attending the 1 day workshop as there will not be time to read it during the event itself. The core of this is the approx. 28-page Sample Case Study. The activities in the workshop will rely heavily on its use during the practical sessions. If you have not read and understood this beforehand, you will not get the full benefit of the workshop. Everyone learns differently – we would advise spending 10-15 hours on your pre-course reading. The pre-course reading will be issued approx. 4 weeks before your course starts to allow time for completion in full. If you are booking on this course within this timescales you must make sure you still complete the work in full.

Live 1-day event

Learners will receive an explanation of the core elements of the PPQ:

The PPQ Syllabus and Learning Outcomes

Learners will undertake a detailed examination of the Learning Outcomes, assessment criteria, how and when each Learning Outcome is assessed, and the Command Verbs.

The Case Study

We provide guidance on reading, reviewing and analysing the case study. Learners consider how to align the case study to the syllabus.

The Scenario and Oral Exam

We consider how to use the 10-minute preparation time, and hints and tips for the scenario discussion. Learners undertake mock scenario discussions.

The Written Report

We investigate how to align the written report exercise to the case study, syllabus and assessment criteria. Learners complete a written exercise question, on which they will receive written feedback post-course.

Review and feedback on written reports

The day after the workshop you will receive individual, personalised feedback on your written reports from your tutor.

Ad-hoc support

Your tutor will be on hand to provide support for you in the lead up to your PPQ assessment.
